This week, Canon has announced a partnership with cyber-security experts, McAfee to offer businesses even more in innovative print security.

What does this news mean for BTS customers? As an official Canon partner, this enables us to provide our customers with an additional security feature on our popular Canon Third Generation imageRUNNER ADVANCE 3rd Edition MFPs. These machines are, of course, already secure by design but with the addition of McAfee Embedded Control software, customers can rest assured that they are purchasing a printer with the most up-to-date security for protecting business information and data. The best bit?  As security threats evolve – which they unfortunately do – so too does the McAfee software, so you will always be protected.

In a recent survey by analyst house, Quocirca, 66% of respondents considered printers to be one of the top five security risks to their organisation. By joining forces and building McAfee Embedded Control Software into this range of multifunctional printers, Canon has addressed this concern. In turn, we are able to provide our customers with enhanced embedded protection against malware attacks and tampering of firmware and applications for what is often an over-looked technology – multifunction printers. It means we can offer the assurance that confidential business data will remain protected, even as office document workflows continue to evolve.

In case you’re not familiar with the term ‘malware’… Put simply, it is software that is written with the intent of damaging devices, stealing data and generally causing considerable damage; viruses, Trojans, spyware, and ransomware are among the different types. We live in a connected world where malware is advancing faster than ever, which is why we constantly look to deliver the most innovative solutions to help reduce the risk posed.

McAfee Embedded Control, which already protects millions of devices including ATMs and retail point-of-sale systems, helps defend against zero-day and advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks by blocking the execution of unauthorised applications through intelligent whitelisting. It helps reduce the risk posed by sophisticated malware, such as worms, viruses, and Trojans and ensures that only Canon-approved, authorised updates can be implemented within the supported imageRUNNER ADVANCE system, helping to prevent tampering of existing firmware and applications.

The Canon Third Generation iR ADV 3rd Edition platform includes: iR ADV 4500 III series, iR ADV 6500 III series, iR ADV 8500 III series, iR ADV C256/ C356 III series, iR ADV 3500 III series, iR ADV 5500 III series and iR ADV 7500 III series. With data protection becoming an increasingly high priority for businesses of all sizes, every one of these models incorporates a range of preventative measures to support businesses in getting ahead of security vulnerabilities.
